Somerset is bounded by Gloucester, Wiltshire, Dorset, Devon. It is about 65 miles in length and is between 30 and 40 miles in breadth. It contains 482 parishes. The county is hilly and includes the Mendip chain. Limestone and Sandstone.

Somerset has 6,129KM of rights of way ,made up of 4,821km of footpaths, 1001km of bridleways, 299 km of restricted byways and 8km of Byways open to all traffic. This means it is the county with one of the greatest length of footpaths in the Country. By contrast , it is very badly off for bridleways. Most of the 1001km of existing bridleways are on Exmoor and the Quantock Hills. The network over the rest of the county is very fragmented. Many of the kms of restricted byways (former RUPPs) are dead ends which are of no use to riders at all.
