Gloucestershire is bounded by Monmouthshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, and Somersetshire. It is more than 60 miles long and no more than 26 miles in breadth. It has one city Gloucester and Spa town of Cheltenham, 27 market towns, 280 parishes. The east of the county is hilly and includes the Cotswold Hills and the Forest of Dean in the west. Main rivers: Warwickshire Avon, lower Avon, Wye, Thames, Coln, Lech, Windrush, Evenlode, Churn, Leden, Swiliate, Careon, Stour.

Gloucestershire has about 3,400 miles of footpaths, bridleways, byways and restricted byways that make up its public rights of way network. Gloucestershire is host to some of the finest walking and riding routes in the country, including parts of three National Trails
